This year, with those celebrations cancelled, we were left feeling momentarily dejected. But this tough time has shown, once again, how resilient our refugee communities are. The need to celebrate this resiliency and to support our communities is more important than ever. So Happy World Refugee Day! As we celebrate this day, we also pay homage to the vital social justice work being done by others. As the Black Lives Matter Movement continues its momentum and demands for justice, we have seen the anguish, but also the hope that change is possible and in our near future. We want to be part of this change. Refugees and immigrants have often stayed away from public protests and movements, fearing retribution and deportation. At CERI and ARTogether we have seen our community come together, find common ground, and discuss issues that are important to them - whether about trauma, intergenerational conflict, immigration, or Black Lives Matter movement, a subject around which misinformation is rife in the refugee community. At CERI and ARTogether we have strived to create safe spaces, where difficult conversations can be had without judgement. We vow to support each other, to work towards a stronger society rooted in solidarity and support, where underserved communities no longer feel unseen. Where refugees, immigrants, Blacks, LatinX, LGBTQIA and all groups that comprise the diversity of the Bay Area can share their unique histories and struggles, yet find common ground, resolve, and love. So today, even as we celebrate our own communities, we believe it is important to also say: Black Lives Matter. We are learning from you. We stand with you and again, happy World Refugee Day. ***
