Loving Our Elders

When I was in my early twenties, I had the great privilege of living with my grandmother. We lived in her little San Francisco apartment, with its creaky wooden floors and the smell of ocean air. At ninety-five years old, her short-term memory wasn’t like it used to be (I had to get creative about how to keep describing my day), but I cherished our time together.

When we’d sit down for breakfast each morning, she set the coffee cups just so and I’d bring goodies from the nearby bakery - little pastries that sparked memories of her childhood. It was one way I got to hear her stories of home, and what it was like leaving and adjusting to life in the U.S.

At CERI, I’ve been deeply touched to experience the incredible community of elders at our office every week. Did you know over a third of our program participants are elders, and we have four weekly elder support groups?

Something we’re also proud of is how we help nurture food traditions. We feed our communities at every event and program possible, and the food is prepared by our very own community members.

This month we’re raising $10,000 to help sustain our community meal funds. Consider contributing to this important work in honor of an elder in your life.

Thank you to our incredible grandmothers, biological and chosen, who carry lifetimes of experience and feed us in countless ways.

In community,

Dani, Development Director
