Remembering History, Celebrating Culture

April 17, 2025 marks the 50th year since the start of the Cambodian genocide. From 1975-1979, 1.5-2 million people – entire universes – were killed by Khmer Rouge policies. In the face of relentless attacks on refugees and immigrants today, we remember this history and remain committed to speaking up and showing up for justice.

This year at the 13th annual Oakland Khmer New Year Festival, we acknowledged the 50th anniversary. All generations gathered to uplift the strength of survivors and celebrate Cambodian heritage with dance, food, and ceremony. Celebrating culture is part of our unstoppable resistance to forces that would rather see us shrink or hide.

These images speak to the resilience of Cambodian survivors of the Khmer Rouge, who are able to experience joy and celebrate New Year while it coincides with the darkest memories of their lives. Survivors teach us that while the genocide will never be forgotten, collective healing from the wounds of trauma is possible. As the second generation learns and performs dances that were almost eradicated by the Khmer Rouge, we witness the power of intergenerational healing.
