Honoring New Year, Honoring Each Other

This April, we came together for our second annual Multicultural New Years celebration — a joyful gathering of Burmese, Nepalese, and Khmer traditions.

We shared the warmth of home-cooked curries, watched community members perform cultural dances, and found surprising connections in the beauty of traditional baskets. Though our histories are different, so much is shared—woven together with culture and care.

This year, our celebration felt especially meaningful. Many in our communities are carrying grief—here and across the world. The local Burmese community is organizing relief after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake shook Burma on March 28th.

One Burmese community member shared, “This year, we’re not celebrating as much. So many are suffering. We’re using our gatherings as fundraisers in the temples.” We are holding the Burmese community in our hearts. 

At the same time, celebrating who we are —our foods, our rituals, our dances, our stories— feels more important than ever. In a time when some try to silence our voices, joy becomes a powerful act of resistance.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, just as you are, making this year's event full of connection and authenticity.
