Sofia Maccabe
Intern
My name is Sofia! I use she/her pronouns. I’m a 4th-year student at UC Berkeley studying Linguistics and Rhetoric.
I got involved in community organizing through a student organization called Suitcase Clinic, serving unhoused communities in Berkeley and Oakland.
I also work as an intern for a research/advocacy group on campus dedicated to organizing Pacific Islanders in higher education. This past semester, I studied abroad in Aotearoa (New Zealand) with a focus on Pacific Studies and reconnecting with my Tongan culture and heritage. This was a really empowering experience to learn my mom’s language and find community with so many other PI students in Aotearoa.
I’m super excited to join CERI and dedicate myself to assisting these clients. I’m hoping to gain experience with hands-on work with clients and deliverable outcomes in their cases. I will also be trying to figure out my post-grad plans and deciding if I want to try and work in nonprofit spaces or continue my education, possibly a PhD or law school.
I love to read and watch movies in my free time. Some of my hobbies include music: I love to dance, sing, and play instruments (mostly brass, a little piano). I also love nature, including hiking and learning about ecology. I love learning new things and am down to try practically anything. Excited to meet you soon!!!
